About Us
What Makes Us So Special?
We grow our seed in a Sustainable Manner which exceeds “organic” qualifications.
We grow and buy only in the United States. Supporting small American Farmers.
We spend countless hours giving you detailed information about a variety in our catalog. No one liners like other seed companies. We even include historical data from catalogs as old as 100 years. This serves as a free database to many researchers.
We sell over 100 varieties of heirloom seeds for less than a $1 No one out there currently does this. This creates a lot of extra work for us, but we want to make healthy food available to everyone and help stretch their ever shrinking dollar!
We are real people. Yes, that kind of sounds silly, but how many times do you feel like you deal with face-less companies and not real people. Companies that now days just don’t seem to care or hold themselves accountable for the things they do. We do care and we are tired of dealing with companies that keep us on hold for 20 minutes when we call or transfer us to an answering service in another country! Read our bios below. We are here for you.
Our Location
Sustainable Seed Company is located in pastoral hills of historic Petaluma, California. That is about 45 minutes north of San Francisco, California. We do not operate a retail location at this time. Mail order only.
We are a new generation of farmers who understand that if there is to be a bright future for humanity we need to start farming and living sustainably today. We are the Sustainable Seed Company…

“I am a city slicker drawn to the farm life. I resided in the LA area until I was 40.
When I would visit my sister, who moved to Sonoma County 2 years before me, I was enamored
with the beauty of the countryside. In 2008, my sister and our husbands developed an acre of
land into Senk Farms. We were fortunate to meet the guys of Sustainable Seed Co. In 2009.
They are the great roll models for any farmer. I started working for their company in 2010 and
support their vision to put agriculture back in the hands of local farmers.”

“I am 19 year old California native. I never really knew much about gardening except for how to pull up weeds and put in seeds, until I interned on the seed farm.
After I took a trip to Europe and wwoofed at a few farms to travel cheap, I became more interested in agriculture primarily because I began to view it as the basis for any form of society, whether
it be mature and developed or nothing more than surrounding villages working to create agrodiversity with which to trade with one another. Then I realized how little I knew, and I decided to intern on the seed farm to gain a plethora of varied general knowledge about farming and many things related to farming.
At this point I am still learning and hope to gain the skills enough to one day have a almost if not completely self-sufficient farm that I can create my own individual impact with.
I believe we have created many challenges for ourselves but that we still have more than enough potential to begin to work with the earth and each other, so that one day we can all say we left our home planet in a better condition than we found it in, when we were born into this world.”

“I have started working at Sustainable Seed Company
because I have a big passion for farming. Learning about growing my own food
season after season has been a passion of mine sense I have been little.
Growing up on a ranch in Oregon I have learned to work hard for the things I
have and farming is the perfect example of that. The sweat and faith that is
put into each plant, nurturing it to life is a rewarding feeling found
nowhere else. But being sustainable is a very important part of farming,
being completely reliant on you is a very fulfilling part of the job of
being a successful farmer. I am proud to call myself a sustainable farmer.”

“I’ve had a strong interest in organic farming/homesteading for a long time now, and after finally purchasing my own farm land in South America, I wanted to get serious and learn as much as I could. Sustainable Seed Co. is perfect for this because Farmer John has a great deal of knowledge of how to grow awesome vegetables and save heirloom seed. The seed saving aspect of farming is really important for me, because where my land is located in South America, heirloom seed is practically non-existent and the hybrid seed is very expensive. I’m excited to finally find a farmer who is interested in passing along his knowledge to others. In the future I’d like to have my own organic sustainable farm, where I raise my own animals for food, save seed from my crops, and provide for my family and community with amazingly nutritious food!”

Theo Gardening at an Early Age!
Theo is…well…what doesn’t Theo do! Actually, none of the entire website here would be possible without him. He is a web and graphic artist

Theo Bill
genius. His talent has really put Sustainable Seed Co. out in the world to be seen. From this website to seed packages to banners and t-shirts. If it says Sustainable Seed on it, he created it! Recently, he has been filming the workings at Sustainable Seed Company and sharing them with the world.
Without him phones wouldn’t get answered, orders processed, seed packages filled, and on the story goes. This company would come to a grinding halt without all the hours Theo tirelessly puts into the company. Theo IS the Sustainable Seed Co. So when you are admiring those amazing veggies you
harvested this summer, remember to send him a quick email and a picture to let him know how
satisfied
you are.
